The 5R’s of Waste Removal

Waste removal is a topic that inspires much heated debate. Many people think that our current methods of garbage disposal are good enough to ensure that the future of our planet is in good hands, but many disagree. There are still a lot of people out there who do not manage their waste in a proper way, and in doing so are hurting the environment. That’s why the five R’s of waste removal are a very important guideline to follow when it comes to the touchy subject of garbage disposal. Think of it as the ‘five commandments’.

Now when most people think of waste removal slogans, they go straight to “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” and since greener alternatives have become such an important thing in the last couple of years, two more R’s have been introduced; Repair and Rot. Confused? You won’t be for long. Let’s go over the 5 R’s together.

Reduce

The best way to reduce waste is to not create any waste at all. Reducing the amount of garbage we produce goes a long way and puts us one step forward toward a brighter waste-free future. The best way to reduce your waste is to do things like use refillable bottles for your beverages instead of purchasing single-use bottles and containers, use both sides of the paper for copying documents and use cloth bags instead of paper or plastic.

Reuse

Believe it or not, many things that we throw away can be reused in varied ways. Objects such as manila folders, binders and mailing envelopes can still be used. Seldom-used clothing and toys can be given away or donated to friends, family or charitable organisations. Many things can still have a life, even after you’re done with them. Remember the saying “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure”.

Repair

Just because something appears to be broken doesn’t mean it’s outlived its usefulness. Most items just need a bit of tender love and care before they’re back to being usable again. Got some blunt knives? Use a knife sharpener. Have some furniture that’s a bit run-down? See if you can fix it before buying a new replacement. Got some old gardening implements? Give them a once over and you’ll probably find a minor issue that can be fixed easily, so they can be brought back to working order once again.

Rot

Some things are just too valuable for the landfill. Kitchen scraps and yard trimmings can be so useful for the garden, especially for composting. Not only does it yield great results for your gardening, but it can also save you so much money.

Recycle

Arguably the most important R on this list, recycling is a major part of our lives. Recycling gives otherwise useless garbage a new lease on life. Recycled materials can be reused many times and is good for our environment. You can also make a bit of money from recycling with bottles and cans. Make yourself a bit money whilst saving the environment.
